The annual meeting will be held at the COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT LANSING DOWNTOWN

Upon your arrival at Capital Region International Airport (LAN), transportation to the Courtyard by Marriott Lansing Downtown will be approximately a 10-minute drive via taxi, Uber, or Lyft. For the tour on Tuesday, September 22, transportation from the hotel to AgroLiquid in St. Johns will be provided via a coordinated bus service. Please note that for the dinner on Wednesday evening, you will once again need to arrange for a taxi or use a rideshare app like Uber or Lyft to reach the venue.

  • 1PM | Thermal Analysis of Soil Organic Matter - Dr. Yelena Kann

    Duration : 45 minutes

    Dr. Yelena Kann is an innovative polymer scientist with over 28 years of industrial experience in plastics stabilization, bio-degradation and processing. After working on biobased-biodegradable Poly(hydroxy alkanoate) (PHA) technology at Metabolix, sustainable e-paper technologies at EInk, advanced materials at Sabic, photonic polymeric materials at OmniGuide and automotive plastics at Lynn Plastics, she continued innovating by founding two startups focusing on plastic pollution, recycling and sustainability.

    Yelena has PhD in Chemistry from the University of Sussex, UK, where her supervisor was the most recognized expert in the area of polymer degradation, Prof. N.C. Billingham.

    Yelena published over 30 technical papers, has been awarded over 50 global patents, won 2018 US National CleanTech Open Business competition, 2019 NY 76West competition, Activate Fellowship in 2020, 2025 PolyNext competition in biodegradable plastics, served as a PI on multiple grants, was an invited speaker at multiple international chemical and materials conferences including World Materials Forum in France, MIT’s Sustainable materials conferences in Cambridge, MA, USA, IUPAC conference in Prague, Czech Republic, Society of Plastics Engineers conferences in the US. She is a Vice-Chair at the ASTM D20.96.14 committee on biodegradable plastics.

    Her interests include plastics stabilization, modification, recycling, degradation, optical properties, color chemistry. She lives in the Boston area of Massachusetts, USA.

  • 1:45 PM | Chemical Diversity of Humic Acids from Different Sources: Linking Chemistry to Plant Biostimulant Activity - Dr. João Vitor dos Santos

    Duration : 45 minutes

    Dr. João Vitor dos Santos is a Humic Research Chemist at Huma Inc., where he works on the development and characterization of humic-based biostimulants. His work combines advanced analytical chemistry and soil science to investigate the chemistry of humic substances and better understand how their properties influence soil and plant health.

    He holds a PhD in Chemistry from Old Dominion University, where he worked under the guidance of Dr. Patrick Hatcher, an internationally recognized scientist in organic geochemistry and an Honorary Member of the International Humic Substances Society. He also holds an MSc in Analytical Chemistry from the University of São Paulo and a BS in Environmental Chemistry from São Paulo State University, Brazil.

    His research interests include humic substance chemistry, soil organic matter, biostimulant activity, soil health, and carbon sequestration. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications, presented his research at international conferences, and collaborated with research institutions across the United States, Europe, and Brazil.

    Duration : 45 minutes

    Hiarhi Monda, PhD, is Humic Research Director at Huma Inc. and a scientist with more than 15 years of experience in humic substances, soil chemistry, plant biostimulants, and sustainable agricultural technologies.

     He holds a PhD in Improvement and Management of Agro-Forestry Resources and an MSc in Agro-Biotechnology from the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. Throughout his career, he has built extensive expertise in the chemistry, molecular characterization, biological activity, and industrial application of humic substances.

    His work focuses on understanding the fundamental mechanisms that drive humic substance activity and translating that knowledge into practical, scalable solutions for agriculture. By connecting advanced scientific research with product development and industrial processes, Dr. Monda works at the interface between laboratory discovery, manufacturing, and field application—transforming complex chemical and biological insights into technologies that can be effectively implemented by industry and ultimately deliver measurable value to growers.

    His research integrates advanced analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, plant physiology, and biological testing to investigate how the molecular, structural, and redox properties of humic substances influence root development, nutrient-use efficiency, plant metabolism, and stress responses.

    Over the course of his career, Dr. Monda has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and collaborated with leading research institutions in the United States and Europe. His work reflects a strong commitment to bridging the gap between fundamental science and real-world agricultural innovation, with a particular emphasis on developing scientifically validated technologies that are both industrially scalable and agronomically relevant.

    His current research interests include humic substance chemistry, structure–activity relationships, redox-mediated biological mechanisms, biostimulant mode of action, process optimization, and the development of next-generation technologies for more efficient and sustainable agriculture.
